The architectural competition was won by Arthur Erickson and Geoffrey Massey, whose striking brutalist design created a unified academic complex that flowed naturally across the mountain’s contours. Construction began in spring 1964, and just eighteen months later—on September 9, 1965—SFU opened its doors to 2,500 students.
